The Namibia Meteorological Services has issued a weather warning for heavy thunderstorms and potential flash floods from March 15 to 21. The City of Windhoek has mobilized resources to assist affected communities and has already dealt with multiple flood-related incidents. Mitigation measures and safety guidelines for residents have been communicated to reduce risks during this period of heavy rainfall.

The Namibia Meteorological Services, in conjunction with the Office of the Prime Minister, has issued a weather warning predicting moderate to heavy thunderstorms from March 15 to 21. Localized flash floods may occur in various regions, including Khomas, potentially leading to minor to significant impacts on the community.

The City of Windhoek has activated a multidisciplinary team, composed of officials from various departments such as Human Settlement, Roads and Storm Water, Emergency Services, Disaster Risk Management, and City Police, to mitigate risks. This team is prepared to relocate vulnerable communities to safer locations if required.

Since January until March 18, the City has addressed 21 flood-related incidents, particularly in Otjomuise’s 8de Laan Informal Settlement, affecting over 280 households. On March 18, 181 informal dwellings were relocated to Farm 508, Goreangab. Notably, a car was swept away in January at the intersection of Robert Mugabe and Sean McBride Streets. Tragically, three deaths occurred from flooding incidents in March, highlighting the urgency for community safety measures.

To reduce flood risk, the City has implemented various mitigation strategies, such as stockpiling sandbags and maintaining drainage systems. Residents are urged to relocate to higher ground before rising water levels and avoid traversing fast-moving water. Teaching children to stay away from potentially dangerous water bodies and securing important documents in waterproof containers are also encouraged measures.

Drivers are advised to take alternative routes if roads are flooded, abandon stalled vehicles, and prioritize safety by following traffic signs and law enforcement instructions while driving cautiously on wet roads. The City’s Flood Standby Team is actively monitoring conditions and will conduct regular patrols and inspections throughout the rainy season, providing updates as necessary.

For assistance, residents may contact the Emergency Control Room at 061211111 (available 24 hours), the Roads & Storm Water Division at 0612902363 (during working hours), or the Customer Contact Centre at 0612903777 to report blocked stormwater.

The ongoing rains and flash floods in Windhoek have prompted the City to take significant precautions to protect its residents. A multi-disciplinary team is in place, ready to respond to incidents and assist vulnerable communities. The implementation of proactive measures, along with constant monitoring and community awareness, aims to mitigate the impact of potential flooding. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prioritize their safety during this challenging weather period.
