On the occasion of the celebrations for International Day of Happiness, Saudi Arabia’s involvement has garnered attention. In Rawalpindi, visitors to the New Kartarpura Food Street at Chandni Chowk are greeted by a unique scene featuring vendors dressed in traditional Middle Eastern attire. They skillfully prepare lassi, a yogurt-based drink, in large metal pots, highlighting a fusion of cultures.

This newly established food street, comprising approximately 30 eateries, offers a spacious and family-friendly alternative to the congested Kartarpura Street, which has long served as a major food hub. Renowned for its vibrant food culture, Kartarpura Street is celebrated for iconic dishes such as nihari and siri paye, beloved in the region.

Lassi, served in both salty and sweet varieties, is a pivotal draw, particularly during the sacred month of Ramadan. The shift of many stalls to the New Kartarpura Food Street, initiated on the first day of Ramadan, addresses long-standing concerns about traffic and congestion in the area.

Abdul Latif Rashid, a representative of Kala Khan Nihari House, spoke about the positive reception of the new venue. He remarked, “This venue has created a new trend, a proper space for families.”

The organizer, Raja Usama, expressed how the new market drew inspiration from Ramadan food festivals held in Dubai, showcasing diverse food options and supporting small businesses. This initiative aims to provide families with a welcoming dining environment.

At Lahore 0 Kilometer, vendor Muhammad Hamza noted that patrons from both Rawalpindi and Islamabad visit to savour their seven different lassi flavors. He shared, “We have great love for Arab countries”, emphasizing the cultural respect for local attire.

Visitors appreciate the new food street for its ability to alleviate the overcrowding of the historic Kartarpura. Mahnoor Kareem, a Chinese language instructor, shared her experience, stating, “We tried their paye and lassi, and we really liked it.”

Kanwal Zahra, who purveys traditional Pakistani cuisine, highlighted her offerings, including lassi and dishes passed down from previous generations. Meanwhile, dumpling vendor Meena Nabeel reported the growing popularity of momos, insisting that positive taste feedback facilitates the dish’s newfound acclaim.

In conclusion, the New Kartarpura Food Street has emerged as a popular dining destination in Rawalpindi, offering a contemporary and family-friendly alternative to the historical Kartarpura Street. The initiative promotes local businesses while also celebrating cultural fusion, particularly with food offerings like lassi and traditional Pakistani dishes. With positive feedback from both vendors and patrons, this food street is poised to become a staple in the community.
