Eddie Jordan, Former F1 Team Principal, Passes Away at 76

Eddie Jordan, former F1 team principal and co-owner of London Irish, died at 76, after battling aggressive cancer. He was a prominent figure in racing, known for founding Jordan Grand Prix and his vibrant personality. His family and Formula One expressed deep sorrow at his passing.
Eddie Jordan, the esteemed former Formula One team principal and co-owner of London Irish rugby club, passed away at the age of 76. He had disclosed in December that he was undergoing treatment for aggressive bladder and prostate cancer, expressing relief at pulling through, and urging men to prioritize health checks. Unfortunately, the cancer returned aggressively, leading to his death in South Africa where he spent part of the year.
In a heartfelt statement, the Jordan family reflected on his vibrant personality, saying, “EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence.” They acknowledged the great sorrow in his absence but expressed gratitude for the memories he left behind.
Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali voiced collective sorrow regarding Jordan’s unexpected passing, remarking on his innate ability to spread joy. He recognized Jordan’s significant contribution to F1, stating, “In this moment of sorrow, my thoughts and those of the entire Formula One family are with his family and loved ones.”
Jordan founded the eponymous Jordan Grand Prix team in 1991, making a notable mark during the 1990s. The team achieved its peak success at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1998, where drivers Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher claimed first and second places. In 1999, the team remarkably finished third in the championship as Heinz-Harald Frentzen contended for the driver title, winning two races that season.
The team’s fortunes dwindled in the 2000s, exacerbated by losing the Honda engine partnership and key sponsorships, resulting in Jordan being bought out in 2005. Born in Dublin in 1948, he remained involved in motorsport, serving as a television and radio pundit, and podcast host for “Formula For Success,” co-hosted with former driver David Coulthard.
Jordan was also recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit, making significant investments and entering a consortium to acquire London Irish rugby club amidst its financial struggles last month. The family confirmed his death on March 20, 2025, noting that he passed peacefully with loved ones by his side after a year-long battle against cancer.
The Jordan family concluded with a tribute: “Eddie and Jordan Grand Prix were known for their rock-and-roll image, bringing a fun and exciting element to F1. Eddie leaves his wife Marie and children, Zoe, Miki, Zak, and Kyle, along with numerous fans who will deeply miss him in the motorsport arena and beyond.
Eddie Jordan’s passing at the age of 76 marks a significant loss for the world of motorsport and beyond. His contributions to Formula One through the establishment of Jordan Grand Prix, along with his charismatic personality, have left an indelible mark. Jordan’s influence extended beyond racing, as he was also a beloved figure in rugby and broadcasting, a testament to his dynamic presence and legacy.
