Daniel Owusu Koranteng has been remanded as a suspect in the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale. His arrest follows an extensive investigation revealing evidence of communication with Suale. The case raises significant concerns about journalist safety in Ghana, and the investigation aims to uncover the perpetrators behind Suale’s assassination.

The Madina Magistrates’ Court has remanded Daniel Owusu Koranteng, Managing Director of ISPY Company, in custody as a suspect in the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale. Mr. Koranteng faces a provisional murder charge linked to Suale’s unresolved assassination, which raises serious concerns about journalist safety in Ghana. As the first suspect arrested in this case, he may be instrumental in revealing the identities of the perpetrators behind this crime.

Ahmed Suale was tragically shot near his family residence in Madina on January 16, 2019. He was a member of the Tiger Eye PI group and had cooperated with the BBC on investigative reports revealing corruption in African football, which likely made him a target for violence. His assassination garnered significant international attention, emphasizing the dangers faced by investigative journalists in Ghana.

Mr. Koranteng’s arrest was the result of an in-depth investigation by the FBI in collaboration with local authorities. Vital evidence was brought to light, including communications between Koranteng and Suale leading up to the murder. Police prosecutors stated that initial findings indicated Koranteng was present in Suale’s neighborhood at the time of the incident

Although Koranteng has acknowledged photographing Suale, he denies selling these images to Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent Ghanaian politician who has been accused of inciting violence against the journalist. Furthermore, Suale’s attorney has reportedly identified Koranteng as the individual who sold the photographs to Agyapong, a former MP known for controversial comments.

During the court proceedings, Mr. Koranteng’s defense attorney, Kofi Essel, dismissed the provisional charge as lacking solidity and requested bail for his client, arguing that the existing evidence does not substantiate the murder charge. The presiding Magistrate, Suzzy Nyakotey, has adjourned the case to April 1 to facilitate ongoing investigations, amidst questions regarding whether the act of selling photographs is adequate grounds for a murder charge.

As the investigation continues, there are hopeful expectations that Mr. Koranteng’s detention may prompt further discoveries and, ultimately, justice for Ahmed Suale. Authorities continue to pursue leads in the case, signaling a commitment to addressing the broader implications for journalist safety in Ghana.

The remand of Daniel Owusu Koranteng as a key suspect in the murder of Ahmed Suale marks a significant development in this long-standing case. His potential involvement and the emerging evidence underscore the challenges faced by investigative journalists and the necessity for ensuring their safety. As investigations proceed, the hope remains for uncovering further truths and achieving justice for the late journalist.
