Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump are set to discuss technical details surrounding a partial truce that would halt strikes on energy and civilian infrastructure. The conversations follow a recent phone call wherein Zelenskyy expressed readiness to implement the truce. Meetings in Saudi Arabia are scheduled to further coordinate steps towards peace, despite ongoing issues with Russia’s adherence to ceasefire agreements.

In a recent development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to discuss the technical aspects of a partial truce that would pause attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure. Following their conversation on March 19, President Zelenskyy expressed support for ceasing these attacks, stating, “Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it.”

Both leaders have instructed their teams to address and resolve the technical issues for enacting and potentially expanding the partial ceasefire. Zelenskyy mentioned that representatives from Ukraine and the U.S. are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia shortly to coordinate further steps toward peace. He noted that these meetings could lead to agreement on essential components required for lasting peace and security guarantees.

President Trump described his discussions with Zelenskyy as “very good,” highlighting that part of their conversation was informed by his previous talks with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. On March 18, Putin dismissed Ukraine’s offer for a 30-day ceasefire, instead advocating for a mutual commitment not to target energy facilities for that duration. Despite this, Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight on March 19, contradicting Putin’s directive to halt such strikes for the agreed period.

The recent discussions between President Zelenskyy and President Trump signify a potential move towards a partial truce amidst ongoing tensions in Ukraine. The planned meetings in Saudi Arabia will focus on technical issues related to halting attacks on civilian infrastructure. Despite setbacks from Russia’s actions, both leaders are seeking pathways to peace and security in the region.
