Remand of Ahmed Suale Murder Suspect: A Significant Legal Development

Daniel Owusu Koranteng has been remanded by the Madina District Court, charged with the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale. The prosecution claims Koranteng unlawfully harmed Suale in January 2019. Evidence includes call records placing Koranteng near Suale’s residence at the time of the murder. An ongoing investigation aims to uncover more suspects involved in the case.
On March 19, 2023, the Madina District Court remanded Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a former friend and colleague of the slain journalist Ahmed Suale, who has been charged with murder. Koranteng, known as Nana or Amakye, is accused of unlawfully causing Suale’s death on January 16, 2019. The court allowed the plea to be preserved despite his legal representation, with Koranteng scheduled to reappear on April 1, 2025.
The prosecution asserts that a relative of Ahmed Suale initiated the case against Koranteng, who was also the managing director of ISPY Company. Both men had worked for Tiger Eye, an organization led by the investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, and had numerous interactions prior to Suale’s death. Tensions arose in June 2018 when Kennedy Agyapong, the owner of Net2TV, displayed Suale’s images on air, calling for violence against him, which led to Suale identifying Koranteng as the source of the photographs.
On the fateful day of January 16, 2019, Suale was murdered following this public disclosure. Call records reportedly placed Koranteng near Suale’s home during the murder. Additionally, post-murder analysis indicated Koranteng traveled from Madina to Amasaman that evening shortly after the incident.
After escaping to the United Kingdom in August 2019 following police investigations, Koranteng returned to Ghana, where intelligence operations culminated in his arrest on March 15, 2025. Although he acknowledged his acquaintance with Suale, his visit to Agyapong, and having taken photographs with him, he denied any involvement in selling those images. Police inquiries are ongoing as efforts continue to identify additional suspects in this high-profile case.
The remand of Daniel Owusu Koranteng signals a crucial development in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Ahmed Suale. As the case unfolds, the prosecution’s evidence, including call records and witness testimonies, will be pivotal. The matter underscores the broader implications of media safety and accountability, particularly in the wake of threats against journalists exhibiting investigative courage.
