The Safari Rally Kenya is set to commence as round three of the 2025 World Rally Championship (WRC) season, marking its status as the first gravel event of the year. This challenging rally takes place in the picturesque Great Rift Valley, home to diverse wildlife such as lions and giraffes, making it a unique backdrop for the event.
Toyota is poised to celebrate its centennial milestone and arrives at the Safari Rally following two perfect scores in earlier rounds. However, reigning champions are aware that this event will present significant challenges, as the rally is characterized by extreme conditions, alternating between high-speed stretches and rugged terrain.
The route spans 384 competitive kilometers, making it the longest of the season, where teams must contend with deep ruts and muddy waters. Elfyn Evans leads the drivers’ standings but has yet to secure a victory at this event, while teammates Kalle Rovanperä, a two-time winner, and Takamoto Katsuta, who has podiumed three times, bring valuable experience.
Elfyn Evans remarked, “The Safari is a unique rally with a special set of conditions to face. It’s not easy even if it’s dry, but when you add the likelihood of rain and standing water, it can be a huge challenge just to get to the end.”
This rally will also feature the debut of Hankook’s new Dynapro R213 gravel tire, adding further intrigue. Defending champion Thierry Neuville is prepared to employ a strategic approach, opting for older car models for improved reliability. Neuville stated, “Taking care of the car and staying away from trouble will be key to that.”
M-Sport Ford enters the competition with three Puma Rally1 cars and a team composed of drivers Grégoire Munster, Josh McErlean, and Jourdan Serderidis. The rally action begins in Nairobi and includes 21 demanding special stages around the scenic Lakes Naivasha and Elmenteita.
In summary, the Safari Rally Kenya, known for its grueling conditions, will be a significant test for competitors in the 2025 WRC season. Toyota arrives in strong form, while drivers like Elfyn Evans and Thierry Neuville prepare to tackle the unique challenges presented by the rugged terrain and unpredictable weather. As the event unfolds in the striking backdrop of the Great Rift Valley, teams will aim for both speed and reliability on this formidable course.
