Mozambican police arrested seven suspects, including two officers, relating to the kidnapping and murder of an Indian businessman in Chokwe. The victim was abducted for ransom, later murdered, and his body discovered in a shallow grave. Ongoing investigations continue to unravel the events surrounding this tragic incident.

The Mozambican police have reported the arrest of seven individuals in connection with the kidnapping and subsequent murder of an Indian businessman in Chokwe. Zaqueu Mucambe, spokesperson for the National Criminal Investigation Service in Gaza province, confirmed that among the arrested are two police officers stationed in Guija district.

The 36-year-old businessman was abducted on March 3 by four armed men as he was closing his shop on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue. The assailants fired a shot to intimidate bystanders before forcibly taking him away in their vehicle. Initially, the gang demanded a ransom of two million meticais (approximately 31,000 USD) from the victim’s family.

Despite the ransom demand, it appears that the businessman was killed shortly thereafter, with his body later discovered in a shallow grave in Chivongoene, Guijá. Police detained three kidnappers at their residences, and they led investigators to the location where the victim was held captive and subsequently buried. Forensic examination of the body is underway to ascertain the official cause of death.

In total, the police have apprehended seven suspects, which include the two police agents, as well as several business individuals, mechanics, and transport operators. Mucambe commented on the motives for the police officers’ involvement, attributing it to “measureless ambition.” All detained individuals, aged 32 to 45, have denied participation in the kidnapping, with some claiming innocence regarding the accusations against them. Furthermore, Sernic indicated that a number of items were seized from the suspects, including firearms and vehicles linked to the crime.

In summary, Mozambique’s law enforcement has taken significant action by arresting seven suspects, including two police officers, involved in the kidnapping and murder of an Indian businessman. The case highlights issues of police complicity in crime and raises concerns regarding public safety. Ongoing investigations and forensic studies aim to clarify the circumstances surrounding the murder and provide justice for the victim’s family.
