A Chinese startup has initiated preorders for its AI-driven humanoid robot, the Dobot Atom, priced at $27,500, with mass production set for mid-year. This 153 cm tall and 62 kg robot can perform diverse tasks. Simultaneously, Midea Group showcased its humanoid prototype. Experts predict prices for such robots will decrease over time as the market for robotic applications expands significantly due to government initiatives aimed at enhancing technological self-sufficiency.

A robotics startup from China has commenced preorders for its AI-powered humanoid robot at a price of 199,000 yuan ($27,500), with plans for mass production anticipated by mid-year. Known as Dobot Atom, this robot is capable of performing various tasks, including preparing breakfast, pouring milk, toasting bread, and carrying items, as demonstrated in a recently released promotional video.

Standing at 153 centimeters and weighing 62 kilograms, the Dobot Atom was developed by Shenzhen-based Dobot, which was founded in 2015 and has expanded its presence internationally with offices in Japan, Germany, and the United States. The company officially announced the launch of its preorder sales on Tuesday.

On the same day, Midea Group, a major Chinese home appliance company from Guangdong that has acquired a German robotics firm, introduced a prototype humanoid robot. This prototype is reported to be capable of actions such as shaking hands, dancing, opening bottle caps, and driving screws.

According to industry expert Ma Jihua, as cited by the Global Times, the unveiling of these humanoid robots indicates that China’s related products are swiftly entering the mass production phase, with their prices predicted to decline toward levels comparable to those of televisions in forthcoming years. He highlighted that “China offers a vast market for robotic applications,” emphasizing the significant potential in eldercare, children’s educational assistance, and household tasks.

In February, President Xi Jinping convened discussions with entrepreneurs, including prominent tech leaders, urging for initiatives to enhance the development of the private sector, as reported by Xinhua News Agency. Amid escalating competition between China and the U.S. in technology, Premier Li Qiang expressed that China aims to enhance self-reliance and capabilities in science and technology in a recent government work report, which also advocates for the extensive application of large-scale AI models for creating intelligent robots and new energy vehicles.

The introduction of the Dobot Atom humanoid robot reflects China’s advancements in robotics and AI technology, exemplifying the competitive landscape in this field. With significant potential for varied applications, the price reductions expected in the coming years will likely enhance accessibility. Noteworthy government support reinforces the direction toward technological self-reliance and innovation, marking an essential trend in the robotics industry.
