Ukrainian Forces Target North Korean Howitzers in Kursk Region

Ukrainian forces destroyed three North Korean howitzers in the Kursk region, successfully engaging them with drone-operated and rocket artillery. This marks the second time such systems have been targeted in the Russo-Ukrainian war, as the conflict remains intense with ongoing clashes reported.
Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed three North Korean M1978 Koksan self-propelled howitzers in the Kursk region, as reported by the Unmanned Systems Forces Command. These artillery systems, provided to the Russian army as military aid from North Korea, were camouflaged in a forest setting and equipped with protective ‘grills’ against FPV drones.
The strike was executed by drone operators who identified the howitzers and directed Ukrainian rocket artillery to engage, utilizing both high-explosive and cluster warheads. This operation marks the second successful engagement of Koksan systems during the Russo-Ukrainian war; they had previously been targeted by the 412th NEMESIS Regiment in Luhansk just a month earlier.
The M1978 Koksan is North Korea’s longest-range artillery system, armed with a 170-mm gun that can fire up to 60 kilometers. Originally designed to reach Seoul from the north of the demilitarized zone, these systems are now employed by Russian forces to mitigate significant artillery losses. Reports indicate ongoing conflict, with 76 combat clashes recorded by March 18, primarily intensifying in the Kursk region.
The Ukrainian forces’ recent success in destroying three North Korean howitzers highlights the ongoing intensity of the conflict in the Russo-Ukrainian war. The use of advanced artillery systems, such as the M1978 Koksan, reflects the evolving strategies employed by both sides. Continuous clashes indicate that the situation remains volatile, particularly in the Kursk area.
