NSCDC Arrests 17 Suspects Linked to Officer’s Murder and Attacks in Niger Delta

The NSCDC has arrested 17 suspects tied to the killing of a corps officer and attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta. The arrests followed a prior assault on an NSCDC base, leading to significant losses. Ongoing investigations aim to further address these criminal activities.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended a group of 17 suspects linked to the murder of a corps officer and assaults on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta. The arrest was executed by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad, in collaboration with allied agencies, on January 12, 2025, as announced by the corps’ spokesman, Afolabi Babawale.
These suspects had been under surveillance by the NSCDC and the Tantita Security Service due to their involvement in previous attacks. Notably, during an assault on a joint base of NSCDC and Tantita Security Service, an Assistant Superintendent was fatally shot, and several items, including firearms and a speedboat, were stolen.
Babawale indicated that this gang was also implicated in an attack against the residence of Petroleum Minister Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, which occurred on January 1. Further investigations are ongoing, and it is anticipated that the suspects will be prosecuted imminently.
Reportedly, authorities have recovered significant items from the suspects, including an AK-47 rifle, empty magazines, military uniforms, and boots. Babawale expressed gratitude towards NSCDC’s Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, for the logistical support that facilitated the successful operation. He remarked that such support is crucial for the NSCDC in its efforts to combat illegal bunkering and other criminal activities.
The NSCDC’s recent operations have led to the apprehension of a gang responsible for violent crimes and attacks on critical infrastructure in the Niger Delta. Their capability to execute such arrests, backed by logistical support, emphasizes the commitment of the NSCDC towards curbing criminal activities in the region. Ongoing investigations promise further accountability and legal action against those implicated in these serious offenses.
