On Sunday, at least three tornadoes struck the CSRA, with additional tornadoes reported in Georgia and South Carolina. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 storm that caused major damage in Paulding County and another EF-1 near Chapin in South Carolina. Community resilience was evident despite the destruction, while fatalities were reported in Alabama.

On Sunday, at least three tornadoes were confirmed in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) following severe storms. The National Weather Service conducted a damage assessment in Barnwell and Burke counties, identifying two EF-0 tornadoes in Burke and one EF-0 tornado in Barnwell. These tornadoes struck areas near Girard in Burke County and between Snelling and Barnwell in Barnwell County. Despite their lower classification, these tornadoes can still inflict considerable damage.

Radar indications prompted at least five tornado warnings across the CSRA early Sunday. While the initial warning was issued, confirmation of the tornado occurrences was only made the following day. In addition to the CSRA incidents, tornadoes were reported in Paulding and Mitchell counties in Georgia, with one also touching down in the Lake Murray area of South Carolina.

The tornado in South Carolina, rated at EF-1, occurred in Chapin at 7:38 a.m. and lifted at 7:48 a.m. It was 125 yards wide, had peak winds around 90 mph, and caused concentrated damage, particularly in the Timberlake neighborhood. This tornado spanned a path of 5.8 miles.

In Paulding County, the EF-1 tornado resulted in significant destruction, damaging 14 homes due to falling trees as storms swept through the area overnight. Witnesses described the chaos, including extensive damage to businesses, with one resident detailing trees crashing through his home. Fortunately, despite the severity of the storm, no injuries were reported among residents.

In Mitchell County, damage included a church steeple and a community center reduced to rubble after a tornado struck around 6:15 a.m. Pastor Ronnie Kinsaul expressed gratitude for the church’s safety despite the proximity of devastation. Local officials confirmed that no injuries were reported, although numerous trees were downed in the area.

Near Troy in Alabama, another tornado caused structural damage, including downed power lines. Although serious injuries were avoided, two fatalities were reported in Dallas County due to tornado-related events. In Talladega, strong winds even flipped a school bus onto a roof.

In summary, Sunday’s severe weather resulted in multiple tornado confirmations across several counties in the CSRA, with notable EF-0 tornadoes in Burke and Barnwell counties, as well as an EF-1 tornado impacting South Carolina. Despite the damage, particularly in Paulding and Mitchell counties, community resilience shone through as residents banded together to assist those affected. Tragically, tornado-related fatalities were reported in Alabama, highlighting the storms’ serious nature.
