Threats of Military Action Intensify in Sudan’s Ongoing Civil War

The leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces threatens military action against government territories, coinciding with intense fighting in Khartoum. The ongoing civil war has caused alarming humanitarian consequences. Violations against civilians are reported by both military factions, while lawlessness persists in urban areas, necessitating international attention and intervention.

Mohamed Dagalo, the leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has threatened a military advance on Port Sudan, the seat of the military-backed government, and northern cities that remain mostly unaffected by the ongoing civil war. This threat coincided with reports of intense fighting in Khartoum, where military forces are gradually moving toward key government locations. In a recent social media address, Gen Dagalo stated, “Monday is the anniversary of the creation of the Rapid Support Forces and we will turn it into a day of regret and grief for the army.”

Dagalo has previously indicated intentions to march on Port Sudan, where Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, the army chief and leader of the government, has been based for over a year. He has now expanded his threats to include northern cities such as Atbara, Shindi, and Dongola. He called for the capture of “criminals,” likely referring to supporters of former dictator Omar Al Bashir who are presently aligned with the army against the RSF.

Although the conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has primarily afflicted Khartoum, the RSF has achieved substantial early victories, including the capture of significant military and government positions. They continue to exert control over much of western Darfur but have lost ground near the capital’s core locations. In his address, Dagalo reaffirmed his commitment to defending the presidential palace and urged citizens, particularly in eastern Sudan, to oppose the military regime.

Recent developments indicate that fighting has intensified near the presidential palace, with reports of RSF-aligned troops securing important locations. Nonetheless, Dagalo’s recent speech was perceived as disorganized and desperate, according to analysts. The ongoing war has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with over 10 million people displaced and millions facing acute hunger due to the conflict.

In the wake of the violence, residents in Khartoum have reported a surge in crime and abuse perpetrated by armed individuals associated with the army, leading to social chaos. The lack of law enforcement exacerbates the situation, particularly in regions like Wad Medani, where civilians continue to suffer from violence and looting. Following a critical security meeting, army officials ordered law enforcement to resume their duties to restore order.

Both factions in this conflict have been accused of civilian abuses, prompting investigations by international entities into potential war crimes, including actions by the RSF in Darfur. Additionally, both Gen Al Burhan and Dagalo are subject to sanctions imposed by the United States due to their involvement in the hostilities.

In summary, the tensions in Sudan continue to escalate as RSF leader Mohamed Dagalo threatens a military offensive against government-held territories. The conflict, which has scarred the nation since April 2023, has resulted in severe humanitarian impacts, including widespread displacement and acute hunger. Amid rampant lawlessness in urban areas, both the military and RSF face allegations of civilian abuse as international scrutiny rises, with ongoing investigations into potential war crimes. The situation remains precarious for the civilians caught in the crossfire, emphasizing the urgent need for stability and humanitarian aid.
