President Chapo Visits Mozambique’s Cyclone-Affected Areas, Advocates for Relief

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo visited cyclone-hit areas in Nampula, highlighting the importance of human life in extreme climatic events. He pledged support to affected households, acknowledging the efforts of relief agencies to minimize the death toll. Key infrastructure, including vital bridges, was assessed for repair amid ongoing concerns for remote areas.
On a recent visit to the cyclone-stricken areas of Mozambique, President Daniel Chapo emphasized the urgent need to prioritize human safety amid increasing climatic events. His visit included the Entente accommodation centre in the Nampula province, where approximately 400 households displaced by Cyclone Jude have sought refuge. This cyclone has affected around 100,000 individuals, with a confirmed death toll of 14.
President Chapo expressed his solidarity with the victims, stating, “I am here because Nampula was the province that suffered most from the cyclone.” He acknowledged the efforts of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) and local disaster management committees in minimizing fatalities.
During his assessment, Chapo examined key roads severely affected by the cyclone, acknowledging that much of Nampula remains inaccessible. With ongoing concerns about an increasing death toll, he highlighted the importance of reaching remote areas.
The President also inspected a devastatingly damaged 200-meter bridge over the Monapo River in Meconta district, which serves as a critical connection on the EN1, the main north-south highway. He noted that a second bridge over the Mecuburi River is also compromised but assured that contractors have been mobilized for immediate repairs. “I thought I should come here to see the damage for myself,” President Chapo remarked, adding, “The damage to the roads is enormous.”
In conclusion, President Daniel Chapo’s visit to the cyclone-affected regions of Mozambique underscores the urgent need for humanitarian efforts and infrastructure repairs. His commitment to supporting the victims, along with the mobilization of contractors for road repairs, reflects the government’s dedication to addressing the aftermath of Cyclone Jude and restoring accessibility.
