The Nigerian Navy’s FOB Badagry intercepted 13,800 litres of petrol and 71 bags of foreign rice through targeted operations from March 7 to 14. This initiative aimed to combat smuggling activities, with a focus on protecting local resources and adhering to federal directives. The Navy pledged ongoing cooperation with customs agencies to enhance enforcement efforts.
The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry has successfully intercepted 13,800 litres of petrol and 71 bags of foreign rice in a series of operations conducted along the Badagry creeks. Navy Captain Oyeleye Omotayo announced that these operations took place between March 7 and March 14, based on intelligence regarding suspected smuggling in the area.
Captain Omotayo indicated that a targeted operation was launched on March 14 at 2:54 a.m. to intercept smugglers. During this operation, the naval personnel encountered smugglers who initially evaded the water patrol but were ultimately apprehended by the land patrol unit. He noted, “71 bags of foreign rice were found being smuggled. The items were seized, while the suspects fled upon sighting our patrol.”
Captioning the swift response to intelligence received, he elaborated that reports of petrol stockpiling near Bollington beach led to further operations. Upon arriving at the site, four vehicles intended for smuggling were discovered, but the suspects had fled. The operation uncovered 234 jerry cans of petrol, which amounted to approximately 5,850 litres, and further seizures added to 7,770 litres of petrol confiscated across various badagry communities.
On March 7 and 8, the Navy confiscated 7,950 litres of petrol from two filling stations and Tongeji Island, conducted lawfully to prevent illegal re-entry into circulation. Captain Omotayo asserted the Navy’s commitment to tackling smuggling activities, emphasizing, “In line with the Federal Government’s directive, FOB Badagry has intensified operations, achieving multiple successes.”
Moreover, he cautioned all involved in illegal activities to cease or face legal repercussions. The Navy stands firm in collaboration with sister agencies, particularly the Nigeria Customs Service, as well as supporting the local communities in combatting these criminal practices.
The operations led by the Nigerian Navy’s FOB Badagry have successfully intercepted significant quantities of petrol and foreign rice, demonstrating an effective response to smuggling activities in the region. The Navy’s increased efforts align with governmental directives aimed at eradicating such illegal practices. The community can expect continued collaboration between the Navy and customs authorities to safeguard local interests and uphold the law.
