Venâncio Mondlane, a former presidential candidate in Mozambique, accused the ruling Frelimo Party of attempting to assassinate him multiple times. He detailed a recent attack involving police firing on his motorcade and reported significant violence against his supporters. Mondlane also described a recent intimidating interrogation by authorities and the detention of key associates.

Venâncio Mondlane, a former presidential candidate in Mozambique, has reiterated his accusations against the ruling Frelimo Party, alleging attempts on his life. In an interview with the Centre for Public Integrity’s podcast, he revealed that he has faced five assassination attempts, the most recent of which occurred on March 5. During this incident, members of the Mozambican riot police, known as the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR), opened fire on his motorcade in the Maputo area of Xiquelene.

According to police reports, they were merely trying to disperse a crowd of Mondlane supporters; however, Mondlane firmly believes he was specifically targeted. He asserted, “Frelimo is very interested in getting rid of me. Right now, Frelimo doesn’t even dare hold a parade, because nobody would attend.” The former candidate further expressed that he felt his life was endangered during the incident, noting that real bullets were used, one of which struck his cameraman, who was just ten meters behind him.

Mondlane highlighted that over 400 of his supporters have been killed by the police due to what he describes as political intolerance and anti-democratic practices imposed by Frelimo. He also expressed concern regarding his recent interrogation at the Attorney-General’s Office (PGR), viewing it as an intimidation tactic. Mondlane noted that no specific charges were communicated to him during this questioning, and he was ultimately released without charge.

Additionally, he mentioned that his treasurer, Gloria Nobre, was detained, and during his own questioning, his spokesperson, Denis Tivane, was informed of a case against him initiated by the Central Office for the Fight against Organised Crime (GCCOT). Tivane has been summoned to appear before this office soon.

The situation involving Venâncio Mondlane continues to escalate, with alarming accusations against the Frelimo Party regarding assassination attempts and the political climate leading to violence against his supporters. His claims of intimidation and the detainment of associates illustrate the troubling state of political tolerance in Mozambique. As the events unfold, the implications for political discourse and safety in the region remain critical.
