A Bangladeshi youth, Kamrul Islam, aged 33, was fatally shot on Thursday evening by two assailants in Wepener, Free State Province, South Africa. Originally from Karmullahpur village in the Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni, Kamrul had relocated to South Africa 12 years prior to escape poverty and started his own business after initial employment.

According to Kamrul’s younger brother, Kamruzzaman, the attackers approached Kamrul with intentions of robbery as he was closing his shop around 9:00 PM. They threatened him with a firearm before stealing cash and other valuables. In a climactic moment, they suspected additional cash was in Kamrul’s car, prompting them to take him outside, where he was shot once in the chest during a struggle, resulting in his death.

Kamrul had recently completed construction on a new home and intended to return to Bangladesh within a few months to marry. His brother mentioned the family’s distress over their father’s death and their mother’s fainting episodes due to the news of Kamrul’s murder. They requested assistance from the Bangladeshi embassy in recovering his remains.

SM Azharul Islam, the upazila’s executive officer, announced that the local administration would be available to aid the family if they required help in repatriating Kamrul’s body.

The tragic incident involving Kamrul Islam highlights the dangers faced by expatriates while they attempt to secure better livelihoods abroad.
