A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Naples early Thursday, prompting residents to sleep in cars due to safety concerns. Injuries and structural damage occurred in Pozzuoli and Bagnoli. Schools will close for safety checks as officials encourage calm and reliance on official updates. The quake highlights the region’s seismic vulnerability.

Residents of Naples experienced significant distress as they were compelled to sleep outside or in their vehicles following a 4.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the city early Thursday morning. The earthquake, reported by Italian seismologists, occurred at 1:25 AM local time at a depth of approximately two miles, leading to power outages in certain areas of the city.

In the nearby town of Pozzuoli, the tremor caused a ceiling to collapse in a home, resulting in serious injuries to a resident, who was subsequently rescued by firefighters, as reported by Corriere Della Sera. In Bagnoli, a coastal district, rescuers worked diligently to assist individuals trapped in their homes, with some residents reportedly escaping through windows, according to ANSA.

Due to concerns regarding structural safety, schools in Naples and surrounding areas are set to close for inspections. Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, the mayor of Bacoli in Naples, encouraged citizens to “remain calm” and to seek information solely from official sources.

Naples is situated on the Campi Flegrei, a volcanic area that inherently predisposes it to seismic activities. This recent earthquake mirrors the intensity of a similar event last May, marking it as the strongest earthquake in the Campi Flegrei region in four decades, following a 3.9 magnitude quake recorded near Naples last month.

The earthquake in Naples has led to significant disruptions, forcing many residents to seek shelter outside their homes. With injuries reported and structural evaluations ongoing in local schools, authorities are urging calm and promoting reliance on official communication for updates. The area’s geological features highlight the risk of such seismic events, underscoring the importance of preparedness.
