On March 12, President Volodymyr Zelensky will hold a news conference following US and Ukraine ceasefire discussions held in Saudi Arabia. During these productive negotiations, officials from both Washington and Kyiv reached an agreement on a ceasefire proposal, along with plans to restore US military aid and facilitate intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Moscow would refrain from commenting on the proposals until the Russian government has conferred with the United States. Reports suggest that President Putin is likely to reject the ceasefire as presented, highlighting that Moscow’s concerns require addressing first.

Senator Marco Rubio stated during a press briefing in Ireland that the US intends to directly communicate with Moscow regarding the ceasefire agreement. He emphasized that Ukraine is ready to cease all combat operations and commence talks for a permanent resolution to the conflict.

Additionally, Senator Rubio underscored that establishing a deterrent against Russia is essential for achieving lasting peace in Ukraine, noting, “There’s no way to have an enduring peace without the deterrence piece being a part of that.”

The news conference held by President Zelensky symbolizes a significant step towards potential peace following constructive discussions on a ceasefire between the US and Ukraine. While positive proposals were agreed upon, Russia’s reactions remain uncertain pending further dialogue. Emphasizing the necessity for deterrence against Russia, US officials express vital considerations for achieving lasting peace.
