SMA Altenso has reached a major milestone, delivering over 1 gigawatt in hydrogen applications through its project in Namibia. This initiative combines photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production. With over 80 successful projects, Altenso emphasizes its expertise in producing green hydrogen and advancing sustainable energy solutions.

SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, is pushing the boundaries of renewable energy usage through innovative global initiatives. The company has recently installed SMA inverter technology for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s hydrogen project, marking a significant achievement of over 1 gigawatt (GW) in total power delivered for hydrogen applications. This project integrates photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production, underscoring Altenso’s strategic position in sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso, noted the significance of reaching the gigawatt milestone and completing over 80 hydrogen projects that predominantly produce green hydrogen from photovoltaic and wind energy sources. He underlined Altenso’s valuable technological expertise and vast international project management capabilities, which are essential in executing complex projects, even those offshore. These initiatives allow for the production of approximately 130,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, advancing the decarbonization efforts within industrial processes.

Jürgen Reinert, CEO of SMA, highlighted the critical role of stable grid integration and load control in the hydrogen and renewable energy landscape. He pointed out SMA’s cutting-edge technologies, along with Altenso’s project experience, as key elements in facilitating renewable energy integration and influencing the future dynamics of energy production.

At a project located along Namibia’s Atlantic coast, Altenso is spearheading the system integration for a battery storage system (BESS) and is offering power-to-gas (P2G) solutions for hydrogen generation. Plans are in place for the PV farm and battery inverter technology to be fully installed by the end of 2024, with hydrogen production anticipated to commence in mid-2025. The specialized rectifier solution developed by SMA utilizes IGBT technology, ensuring compatibility with various electrolyzers and stabilizing the grid through integrated services, such as fault ride-through and reactive power support.

Moreover, Altenso has developed an advanced energy management system (EMS) specifically for these types of projects, aimed at optimizing sustainable hydrogen production by leveraging photovoltaic forecasts and variable demand profiles.

In conclusion, SMA Altenso has achieved a significant milestone by delivering over 1 gigawatt in hydrogen applications, illustrating its leadership in sustainable energy solutions. Through a combination of technological expertise, innovative project implementations, and a focus on green hydrogen production, Altenso is making substantial contributions to decarbonizing industrial processes. The company’s initiatives, including the advanced energy management system and sophisticated battery storage integration, position it at the forefront of the renewable energy sector.
