A 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student, Sudiksha Konanki, has been reported missing in Punta Cana after last being seen on March 6 at 4:15 a.m. The Dominican National Police released surveillance footage showing her entering the beach area from the Riu República Hotel with three individuals. Authorities have identified a person of interest in the case, who was last reported to be with Konanki but has not been deemed a suspect, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Thomas Julia.

Efforts to locate Ms. Konanki include participation from the FBI, Dominican Air Force, and navy, among others. Sheriff Mike Chapman expressed concerns regarding inconsistencies in witness statements, emphasizing the need for thorough inquiries into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. The police have since begun re-interviewing those who were with her prior to her going missing, as well as hotel staff.

In response to the situation, more than 300 search personnel have been deployed to the area. Dominican President Luis Abinader commented that the case is being treated as an accident, stating that witnesses claimed a wave may have swept her away. However, concerns regarding the gradual investigation into possible foul play were raised by her father as her belongings were found with friends, which he noted was unusual for her.

Authorities continue extensive search operations, utilizing drones and helicopters. Meanwhile, Konanki’s family has arrived in Punta Cana, urging further investigations into all possible scenarios, including abduction. The Riu Hotels chain has expressed its sorrow and commitment to assisting local authorities during this troubling time.

The investigation into Sudiksha Konanki’s disappearance remains ongoing, with authorities conducting surveys at the beach and surrounding areas. A person of interest has been identified, but there are no formal charges. Despite the claims of accidental drowning, the circumstances of her absence and the peculiarities surrounding her belongings leave many questions unanswered, prompting family members to request a broader investigation into potential foul play. The collaboration among various national and international agencies underscores the importance of resolving this matter swiftly and effectively.
