The Ghana government allocated GH¢492.5 million for disaster relief, with GH¢200 million for tidal wave victims and GH¢292.5 million for Akosombo dam spillage victims. The recent disasters displaced thousands and caused widespread damage, prompting governmental action and a commitment to coastal protection.
The Ghanaian government has designated a total of GH¢492.5 million to assist victims of recent natural disasters, specifically GH¢200 million to the tidal wave victims in the Ketu South Constituency. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson made this announcement during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement to Parliament.
Additionally, the government allocated GH¢292.5 million to aid those affected by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam. Reports indicate that the tidal wave disaster has impacted over 300 individuals, resulting in the destruction of 50 homes and significant damage across 80 kilometers of coastline.
President John Mahama visited the affected regions and committed to advancing a sea defense project designed to safeguard vulnerable coastlines. The spillage from the Akosombo Dam has rendered approximately 35,857 people, including children, homeless, as per UNICEF’s assessment.
In 2023, the Volta River Authority released water from the Akosombo Dam to avert overflow, leading to flooding occurrences in low-lying areas along the river, with North and Central Tongu districts being particularly devastated.
The Ghanaian government’s allocation of GH¢492.5 million for disaster relief demonstrates its commitment to supporting victims impacted by tidal waves and dam spillage. With significant funds directed towards rehabilitation efforts, the government, led by President John Mahama, endeavors to protect vulnerable communities and mitigate the consequences of natural disasters.
