The Windhoek High Court is set to commence the trial of 29-year-old Rodney Hoxobeb on Tuesday. Hoxobeb is accused of murdering his employer, Christof Mungunda, at the Tallismanus settlement in the Omaheke region in September 2022. Hoxobeb had been employed as a general farmworker on Mungunda’s farm since July 2022, according to the indictment.

The indictment alleges that an argument escalated between Hoxobeb and Mungunda on September 16, 2022, leading Hoxobeb to express his intent to kill Mungunda to his girlfriend. On that same day, Hoxobeb allegedly attacked Mungunda with a wooden axe handle as the farmer was returning to his home. The attack reportedly involved multiple strikes to the head, neck, and body.

It is claimed that, upon realizing Mungunda was still alive, Hoxobeb threw a rock at the deceased’s head, resulting in fatal injuries. A postmortem report confirmed that Mungunda died from blunt-force trauma to the head at the scene. Following the incident, Hoxobeb is said to have stolen Mungunda’s vehicle and fled with his girlfriend and her cousin, during which he drove recklessly and collided with a co-worker.

The state has charged Hoxobeb with multiple offenses, including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, reckless driving, driving without a license, and driving under the influence of alcohol. This trial marks a significant case in the ongoing efforts to address violence and crime in the region.
