Eyewitness accounts indicated that after the manager requested the fans to quiet down, the situation escalated. The power supply was cut off, aggravating the fans who subsequently became louder. It was during this unrest that the guard reportedly opened fire, injuring others and leading to the death of the fan identified as 30-year-old John Ssenyonga.

Another Arsenal supporter, Lawrence Mugejera, was injured in the incident and has been taken to the hospital for treatment. Both the guard and the restaurant manager are currently evading arrest while police seek to apprehend them. According to local police chief Twaha Kasirye, a firearm was recovered from the scene, and he urged anyone with information to assist in locating the suspect. He also encouraged fans to manage their excitement responsibly.

Violence and fatalities tied to football matches, especially involving English teams, are not uncommon in Uganda, where the Premier League garners significant attention. Earlier this month, an Arsenal supporter stabbed a Manchester United fan following a dispute over the outcome of a match. Additionally, in January, a youth advisor was stabbed to death during a feud after Arsenal lost to Manchester City, and just a week prior, another Arsenal fan was killed in Adjumani during a separate altercation.

This tragic incident highlights the dangers associated with football-related celebrations in Uganda, where heightened emotions can lead to violence. Local authorities are urged to ensure fan safety during such events and promote responsible behavior among supporters. The police’s response is crucial in addressing this growing concern.
