Among the attendees were nominated Senator Peris Tobiko, family, and friends, including his father, Salaash Kaetuai. The body has been taken to Chiromo Mortuary, where arrangements for the final rites are underway.

Officer Kaetuai’s death occurred as a result of an attack by armed gangs while he was on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti. The Multinational Security Support Mission confirmed the loss through social media, reporting that he succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the attack. Despite immediate medical attention, including transportation to a hospital for gunshot wounds, Officer Kaetuai did not survive.

Kenya’s Foreign Ministry, through Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, conveyed heartfelt condolences via social media, stating he was “heartbroken by the loss of a member of Kenya’s deployment.” This incident highlights the ongoing violence crisis in Haiti, where gang-related killings reached 5,601 in 2024, a troubling rise from the previous year.

The pervasive violence has also resulted in numerous lynchings and extrajudicial killings, displacing over a million individuals, as reported by the UN’s migration office. The situation has raised concerns about the security and efficacy of international peacekeeping efforts in the region.

Despite a brief interruption in funding due to political decisions in the US, the peacekeeping mission in Haiti continues, with Kenya’s role being pivotal to the restoration of stability.
