Severe Disruption on EN1 Highway in Nampula Due to Tropical Storm Jude

The EN1 highway in Mozambique is severely affected by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Jude, necessitating immediate repair work. The disruption spans approximately 15 meters, with multiple nearby routes also becoming impassable. Emergency kits have been distributed in anticipation of significant human impact from the cyclone.
The National Road No. 1 (EN1) has experienced a significant disruption near the Anchilo Control Post due to severe rainfall caused by Tropical Storm Jude. Restoration work is slated to commence on Tuesday, although no estimated completion date has been established.
Faquira Massalo, the Director of Public Works in Nampula, emphasized the severity of this disruption, highlighting the critical nature of the EN1 highway, which necessitates immediate attention for restoring traffic flow. The affected section measures approximately 15 meters in length and exhibits a depth ranging from 5 to 7 meters.
In light of this situation, the National Roads Administration (ANE) has dispatched engineers to the site to evaluate the terrain. They plan to implement washing systems to facilitate water flow in the area. Additionally, multiple routes in the Nampula province have become impassable, including cuts from Nametil to Angoche, Nampula to Liúpio, and at the Naguema to Chocas-mar intersection, among others.
Concerning the cyclone’s human impact, Anacleta Botão, the INGD delegate in Nampula, reported a lack of concrete data owing to the limitations experienced by survey teams. She noted that weather improvement commenced on Tuesday morning, assisting assessment efforts. Nonetheless, she confirmed that emergency kits have been pre-positioned in areas at risk of significant impact.
