Health Commissioner Faruk Abubakar emphasized the importance of taking precautionary measures and urged individuals experiencing symptoms—such as high fever, stiff neck, and severe headaches—to seek immediate medical attention.
Meningitis, which tends to be more prevalent during Nigeria’s hot season, poses a significant public health challenge in Africa’s most populous nation, affecting the protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord. Furthermore, Nigeria continues to confront malaria, which represents an epidemic burden globally. Reports from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that between 2022 and 2023, Nigeria, situated within the African Meningitis Belt, witnessed 2,765 suspected cases and 190 fatalities. In 2024, the World Health Organization reported a similar outbreak claiming 153 lives. Nigeria is actively implementing a strategic plan approved by the World Health Assembly in November 2020, aimed at eradicating meningitis by the year 2030.
