The Nigerian Bar Association Minna Branch condemns police shootings and extrajudicial killings, urging investigations and reform to protect citizens’ rights in Niger State.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Minna Branch has condemned the increasing incidents of reckless shootings and extrajudicial killings by police in Minna, Niger State. They called upon the police to investigate and prosecute those responsible, provide compensation to the victims’ families, and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.

In a formal letter from Chairman Barr. Isyaku Barau to the Niger State Commissioner of Police, the NBA stated that the unlawful killings of innocent civilians undermine fundamental human rights and severely damage public trust in law enforcement. Barr. Barau referred to alarming incidents including the killing of a Keke NAPEP rider, the shooting of a female immigration officer, and the murder of a young footballer by an allegedly intoxicated officer.

The pattern of extrajudicial killings is concerning, according to Barr. Barau. He urged immediate actions from the police command, including comprehensive investigations, prosecution of involved officers, victim compensation, and necessary preventive measures like reassessing firearm protocols and providing mental health evaluations for officers on duty. Furthermore, the NBA Minna Branch expressed that any attempts to shield implicated officers would result in strong legal actions and public protest, emphasizing the urgent need for police reform to restore trust in law enforcement.

The Nigerian Bar Association Minna Branch has taken a firm stand against police misconduct and extrajudicial killings in Niger State. By demanding accountability, compensation for victims, and police reform, they seek to restore public confidence in law enforcement. The call to action highlights both the necessity for thorough investigations and the importance of human rights protections in policing.
