The Kenya Meteorological Department has stated that the long rains have not yet started despite recent showers. The actual long rains are expected to begin by late March or early April. Farmers should wait to plant, as various regions will experience moderate rainfall but high temperatures and strong winds persist.

David Gikungu, the Director General of the Kenya Meteorological Department, has provided an update regarding Kenya’s long rains. He emphasized that although recent rains have occurred, the actual long rains have not yet commenced. According to Gikungu, this rainfall, which began on March 8, serves as an introductory phase, with the official long rains anticipated to begin in late March or early April.

Gikungu cautioned that these current showers may subside by mid-week; however, regions in western Kenya might still experience moderate rainfall. He advises farmers to delay planting until early April when the long rains are expected to fully establish, optimizing conditions for crop growth. This weather pattern is crucial for agricultural planning.

The meteorological department’s forecast indicates that eight regions, including the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, are expected to receive moderate to heavy precipitation. Areas such as Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, and Nyeri should begin to witness rain starting from March 12.

Despite the precipitation, temperatures are notably high, exceeding 30°C in many areas. Additionally, strong southeasterly winds, exceeding 25 knots, are affecting regions in northwestern and northeastern Kenya. Therefore, while the rain may provide some temporary relief, the accompanying heat and winds will continue to influence the weather conditions.

In summary, the Kenya Meteorological Department has clarified that while recent rainfall has occurred, the long rains have not yet begun. Officially anticipated for late March or early April, farmers are advised to wait before planting. Certain regions will experience varying degrees of rainfall; however, temperatures remain high, and strong winds are still present, balancing the weather pattern.
