In December 2023, they were attacked, resulting in a physical confrontation captured on CCTV. Despite the neighbors being prosecuted, the Byrnes have now been charged with injuring them, with uncertainties regarding the outcome communicated to them by the British Embassy.
Mrs. Byrne described the attackers as Thai kickboxers, recounting her account of the assault where she was “continually stamped on my head,” and her husband was “ferociously thumped 22 times.” She emphasized her belief their actions were purely defensive, stating, “I strongly believe, 100%, it was in defence.” After initially denying the charges, the younger couple reportedly changed their plea to guilty, leading to the Byrnes being summoned by police last May to face charges themselves.
Following this, their fingerprints were taken and their passports confiscated, which left them in a state of shock. Mrs. Byrne commented on the incongruity of the injuries, noting, “The superficial injuries to both of these people is laughable.” They are anticipating a court session on Wednesday for their case’s outcome and expressed feelings of entrapment due to their inability to leave Thailand.
Luke Myer, their former MP, has taken action to elevate their case with the Foreign Office, highlighting the importance of ensuring fair treatment under Thai law. A spokesperson from the Foreign Office affirmed their support for the couple and confirmed communication with local authorities. Mrs. Byrne expressed cautious optimism, saying, “We are not pessimistic, we both know we’ve done nothing wrong,” yet acknowledged the need to brace for any developments in their case.
