Venâncio Mondlane will testify before the PGR in Maputo on March 11 regarding a criminal case. The hearing was postponed at his request. Mondlane faces civil cases following protests and has not spoken publicly since a recent police incident. The proceedings against him involve allegations of undermining democratic principles.

Venâncio Mondlane, a prominent Mozambican politician, announced his intention to appear before the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in Maputo on Tuesday for a statement concerning an ongoing criminal case. He shared this news via his official Facebook account, stating, “See you tomorrow, at 9:00 am, at the PGR.” His advisor, Dinis Tivane, affirmed Mondlane’s participation in the hearing following his completion of tasks abroad.

The scheduled hearing was postponed from its original date to Tuesday, March 11, due to a request from Mondlane’s representative at the PGR. A representative from the Public Prosecutor’s Office indicated that Mondlane will be questioned as part of an ongoing criminal case that was filed last year, stemming from protests against the election outcomes that Mondlane leads since October.

Mondlane has not issued any public statements since an incident involving police action against demonstrators last Wednesday, resulting in his hasty departure from the scene. Additionally, he faces civil actions, including a demand for 1.5 million euros for damages related to protests in the Maputo province, as well as a substantial claim of approximately 32,377,276.46 meticais regarding losses incurred in the capital.

The PGR initiated proceedings against Mondlane after a “presidential decree” he issued, which was deemed as undermining democratic principles. This document, which outlined measures for the forthcoming 100 days, implied that the populace should form an autonomous court to address alleged police abuses. The PGR emphasized that such declarations contradict the constitutional framework and are strictly reserved for state authorities.

As the runner-up in the October presidential elections, Mondlane leads a significant challenge against the electoral results, which declared Daniel Chapo as President of Mozambique. Reports indicate escalating violence from the protests, with NGOs documenting at least 353 fatalities from clashes with authorities.

Venâncio Mondlane is set to appear before the Attorney General’s Office in Maputo on March 11 regarding a criminal case linked to his political activities and protests. Amid civil claims and scrutiny over his actions, he represents a notable opposition against the recent election results, which have led to violent confrontations, claiming numerous lives. The upcoming hearing is a pivotal moment in his ongoing legal challenges.
