In Uasin Gishu, Mr. Collins Letting ran an unauthorized police station for six months, using it to enforce local laws on timber. The illegal facility went undetected by authorities and even local leaders. Discovery occurred on March 8, prompting police investigations into the operation and its implications for community safety.

In the Uasin Gishu region of Kenya, Mr. Collins Letting, a controversial trader and political activist, has created a makeshift police station at Cherus Centre, unbeknownst to local authorities and without authorization from the Inspector-General. Residents of the Chebarus area were taken aback upon learning that this police facility, designed to monitor illegal timber possession from Cengalo Forest, was operated for over six months.

The improvised station boasted features such as detention cells and was adorned in police colors, raising suspicions as even the local chief was unaware of its illegality. The presence of Mr. Letting, a figure with prior legal troubles and connections to a former MP, led many to mistakenly view the site as an official police establishment.

The operation was discovered by police on March 8, following which they reported the matter to Kamuyu Police Post. The police expressed their astonishment at the existence of such an unauthorized facility, highlighting that only the Inspector-General has the power to establish police stations in Kenya.

As investigations unfold, Uasin Gishu County police commander Benjamin Mwanthi has reassured community members of their safety and is coordinating efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident. Further inquiries are set to be conducted by a local security team, aiming to clarify the motives behind Mr. Letting’s actions.

The establishment of an unauthorized police station by Mr. Collins Letting in Uasin Gishu has raised significant concerns regarding public safety and law enforcement operations. While residents were misled into believing they had a legitimate police presence, authorities have assured community members that investigations are underway. This incident underscores the importance of proper regulation and oversight in policing to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens.
