The 20-year-old student, a legal permanent U.S. resident and Indian citizen, disappeared early Thursday during the trip with a group from Loudoun County, Virginia.
Reports indicate that after visiting a nightclub, Konanki and her friends went to the beach around 4 a.m. local time on Thursday. Her companions reportedly returned to their hotel around 5:55 a.m. and were documented by security cameras. A man, whose identity remains undisclosed, stayed with Konanki at the beach. He claimed they swam together but was later unable to find her after waking up on a beach bed.
Surveillance footage confirmed that the man returned to his hotel around 9:55 a.m. but he is not being considered a suspect in the investigation. Three Dominican officials indicated that Konanki is presumed to have drowned. The last confirmed sighting of Konanki was via security footage at approximately 4:15 a.m., and the U.S. embassy was notified of the disappearance on the following Friday.
