Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student, is missing in the Dominican Republic, with fears she may have drowned. Last seen at Riu Republica Resort, investigations are ongoing, examining possibilities from drowning to foul play. University officials offer support to Konanki’s family as the search continues.

A student from the University of Pittsburgh, Sudiksha Konanki, aged 20, has been reported missing while on spring break in the Dominican Republic, with authorities believing she may have drowned. She was last recorded on security cameras outside the Riu Republica Resort in Punta Cana at approximately 4:50 a.m. while in a bikini. The investigation indicates that she and a companion went swimming after most of their group had returned to the hotel.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office’s spokesperson, Thomas Julia, expressed skepticism about the drowning conclusion, stating, “But there is no evidence to support that conclusion at this time.” Investigators are exploring various possibilities, including foul play, while conducting interviews and examining video and phone records of the incident.

Konanki’s companions informed authorities when she was not found in her room after a party on Wednesday night; they confirmed that she had planned to attend. Descriptions of her attire and personal accessories were also noted in an effort to assist in locating her.

Konanki is a pre-med student expected to graduate in 2026, having previously attended a prestigious high school in Virginia. Her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, described her as “a very nice girl” with aspirations in the medical field. Complications have arisen in the investigation, as the U.S. State Department collaborates with the Indian embassy in the Dominican Republic due to her dual citizenship status.

University officials indicate their continued support for the family in this situation. “We have offered our full support in their efforts to find her and bring her home safely,” remarked Jared Stonesifer, a spokesperson for the university. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki raises concerns regarding safety during travel, particularly in areas identified as having elevated risk factors. While authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her last known whereabouts, it is crucial that travelers remain vigilant and exercise caution. The University of Pittsburgh and local officials are actively supporting efforts to locate Konanki and ensure her safe return.
