Two Arrested in Balaka for Fraudulent Activities Related to Registration Scheme

Two suspects have been arrested in Balaka, Malawi, for allegedly attempting to defraud residents by posing as representatives of a nonexistent registration program. Jonas Kazembe and Catherine Kamodzi were apprehended after collecting fees for scanning National Identity Cards without any valid organizational documentation. The investigation is ongoing, and both individuals will face court charges soon.

In Balaka, Malawi, two individuals have been arrested for allegedly engaging in fraudulent activities. The suspects, identified as 32-year-olds Jonas Kazembe and Catherine Kamodzi, were apprehended following a report of their suspicious actions on March 8, 2025, in Chauluka Village, situated within Traditional Authority Nsamala.

According to Balaka Police Station’s publicist, Inspector Gladson M’bumpha, the suspects informed local residents that they were representatives of the Tithandizane 2032 Program, promising benefits in exchange for registrations. They were reportedly scanning National Identity Cards from the residents and demanding a fee of K3,000.

Balaka Police responded promptly to the report and, during questioning, the suspects could not provide any official documentation pertaining to their alleged organization. The District Commissioner, Tamanya Harawa, stated that he was unaware of any such program operating in the district. Currently, the situation is under ongoing investigation.

The police have confiscated the suspects’ mobile phones as evidence, and both Kazembe and Kamodzi are set to face court proceedings to respond to the charges of intent to defraud. Kazembe hails from Kalimanjira under Traditional Authority Makwangala, while Kamodzi is from Namata Village under Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe.
