Initiative for Mass Electric Vehicle Transportation in Northeast Nigeria
The Tinubu administration plans to launch mass electric vehicle transportation in northeast Nigeria, backed by the Federal Executive Council’s approval of contracts worth $100 million. This initiative includes ten electric buses and 7,000 e-tricycles, funded by the North East Development Commission, with a focus on reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency in the region.
The Tinubu administration is set to initiate large-scale electric vehicle transportation in northeast Nigeria, following the approval of contracts by the Federal Executive Council. Nearly $100 million, equivalent to N151.9 billion, has been allocated for the procurement of buses, tricycles, and the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
The Council sanctioned a contract for ten 17-seater electric buses, which will be supplied by Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited at a cost of N2.9 billion within a six-month timeframe. Concurrently, Messrs Mutual Commitment Company Limited is scheduled to supply 4000 e-tricycles for N49.6 billion over a period of nine months, alongside an additional 3,000 tricycles from Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development for N37.2 billion. Sinoma Investment International Limited is to supply another 3,000 e-tricycles, each with capacity for nine passengers plus a driver.
Moreover, under a separate contract valued at N16.3 billion, Messrs. HNCEGC will provide 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs. KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited is tasked with establishing the necessary charging points for the e-buses and tricycles at a cost of N8.4 billion. The North East Development Commission will finance these contracts as part of its commitment to minimize carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency in the region.
President Tinubu authorized the acquisition of electric vehicles in October of the previous year, having inspected samples of the vehicles, chargers, and batteries prior to the approval.
In summary, the Tinubu administration is embarking on a significant electric vehicle initiative in northeast Nigeria, marked by substantial financial investments and a focus on sustainability. With a clear plan to procure electric buses and tricycles and develop infrastructure, this initiative aims to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the region, ensuring a progressive approach to transportation and environmental responsibility.
