Morocco Experiences Significant Weather Changes: Rain Returns After Drought

Morocco is experiencing significant weather changes with returning rainfall after a prolonged drought. This shift, attributed to a weak high-pressure system, is expected to bring thunderstorms and heavier rain throughout March. Key regions like Marrakech and Souss will see intensified precipitation during the weekend.

Morocco is undergoing significant weather changes as rainfall returns following a prolonged dry spell and drought. After months of high temperatures, the General Directorate of Meteorology reports these transformations are attributed to a weakening high-pressure system, which had obstructed rainfall. Meteorologists predict ongoing rain and weather disturbances throughout March across various regions of the country.

Houcine Youabed, Head of Communications at the General Directorate of Meteorology, mentioned that the recent shift allows low-pressure systems to enter Morocco, leading to thunderstorms and snowfall. He anticipates heavy rainfall, particularly on Thursday, affecting the northern and central regions, including Tiznit, where thunderstorms and snowfall are anticipated.

A temporary improvement in weather is expected on Friday before a robust low-pressure system hits over the weekend, bringing heavy rain, especially on Saturday and Sunday. This will impact most of Morocco, with strong winds along the northern and central coastlines. Areas around Marrakech and Souss are likely to experience intensified rainfall during this period.

It is noteworthy that similar weather phenomena were absent during December and January, as the Azores High had previously blocked rainfall from reaching Morocco, while countries like Portugal gained significant precipitation. The contrast showcases the changing climate dynamics affecting regional weather patterns.

In summary, Morocco is witnessing a welcome return of rainfall after a prolonged drought. Changes in the high-pressure system have enabled the arrival of multiple low-pressure systems, resulting in thunderstorms and snowfall in some regions. Heavy rainfall is forecasted to continue throughout March, particularly over the weekend, bringing relief after months of dry conditions.
