Snowfall Forecasted Amid Ongoing Challenges in Morocco’s Al Haouz Province

Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology forecasts snowfall of 5-15 cm in various provinces, particularly impacting those in Al Haouz, which is still recovering from a severe earthquake. With significant snowfall expected, the government has addressed the crisis by providing financial aid and construction permits for affected families to support rebuilding efforts.
Rabat has issued a new orange-level alert regarding snowfall, which is anticipated to impact several provinces in Morocco, particularly Al Haouz, a region that underwent severe earthquake damage in September 2023. The General Directorate of Meteorology warns of accumulations between 5 to 15 centimeters at elevations above 1,800 meters, especially on the upcoming Monday and Tuesday.
The provinces of Azilal, Beni Mellal, Midelt, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, and Al Haouz are expected to receive between 10 and 15 centimeters of snow. Additionally, provinces such as Ifrane, Boulemane, Taroudant, and Chichaoua anticipate 5 to 10 centimeters during the same period. These winter weather conditions may heighten the challenges faced by residents, particularly those in Al Haouz, where recent videos depict the perilous conditions.
The footage circulating online highlights the difficulties endured by residents in Al Haouz, where snow has accumulated on tents and temporary shelters. This region remains in a state of recovery following the earthquake that tragically resulted in the loss of over 3,000 lives, with countless injuries and significant property damage.
In response to this crisis, Morocco established a fund to assist earthquake victims, receiving contributions from both citizens and organizations. As of January of the previous year, the government reported that 56,000 families in earthquake-stricken areas have received financial aid for home reconstruction and rehabilitation, achieving a 95% completion rate with a budget of approximately MAD 1.4 billion.
Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch noted that over 53,000 construction permits have been issued to affected families, which accounts for 90% of the surveyed population in Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Marrakech, Taroudant, Azilal, and Ouarzazate. This initiative aims to facilitate rebuilding efforts and mitigate the ongoing hardships stemming from the disaster.
The imminent snowfall poses significant challenges for residents in Morocco’s provinces, particularly in Al Haouz, which is still recovering from a devastating earthquake. The government has taken substantial steps to support affected families through financial assistance and reconstruction efforts, achieving notable progress. As the harsh weather conditions unfold, the resilience and welfare of these communities remain a vital concern.
