On Friday, a Bangladeshi man named Al-Amin was shot and killed by the BSF along the Kasba border. Following the injury from gunfire, he was taken into BSF custody but died later that evening. Local authorities were informed, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, as Al-Amin had past involvement in smuggling activities.

A tragic incident occurred on Friday evening when the Border Security Force (BSF) of India shot and killed a Bangladeshi youth named Al-Amin, aged 32, along the Kasba border in the Brahmanbaria district. The shooting transpired around 7:30 PM when the BSF members allegedly fired rubber bullets at a group of individuals near the border. Al-Amin was taken into custody after being wounded, but he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the BSF camp around 9:00 PM.

Local authorities and residents have expressed confusion regarding the circumstances leading to the shooting. Billal Hossain, the chairman of the Bayek union parishad, confirmed the incident but noted that the exact cause of the gunfire is still uncertain. Communication with Al-Amin’s family remains challenging due to network issues in their area, although it is reported that he was involved in sugar smuggling, a common activity in the crime-prone Dakshin Putiya village.

Samiul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), informed Prothom Alo that the BSF acted under the suspicion that Al-Amin was engaged in smuggling activities. Following the incident, the BSF took him to their camp for medical care; however, he did not survive the night. In response to this incident, the UNO reported that communications regarding the shooting had been sent to BSF through the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), with a flag meeting scheduled to discuss the matter.

It is noteworthy that local residents recounted previous instances of violence near the border, citing the deaths of two youths on November 25 of the previous year and another individual on April 22. Such recurring violence underscores the tensions and dangers associated with border areas known for smuggling activities.

The tragic death of Al-Amin highlights ongoing tensions at the India-Bangladesh border, particularly relating to smuggling activities. The incident raises serious questions about the usage of lethal force by border security personnel. It underscores the need for improved communication and security protocols between the BSF and local authorities to prevent further loss of life and address border tensions effectively.
