Tragic Rainfall-Related Incidents Claim Lives in Zimbabwe

Since the start of Zimbabwe’s rainy season last October, 60 people have died and nine were injured due to rainfall-related incidents. Heavy rains have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, leading the government to conduct search and rescue operations. Minister Garwe has called for temporary halts in artisanal mining and urged public caution during storms.

In Zimbabwe, recent rainfall-related incidents have tragically resulted in the deaths of 60 individuals and injuries to nine others since the onset of the rainy season in October. The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) reported that following a period of below-average rainfall between October and December 2024, Zimbabwe has faced significant downpours starting in January, leading to various rain-induced disasters such as drownings and lightning strikes.

The heavy rains have inflicted substantial damage on public infrastructure, affecting schools, healthcare facilities, roads, bridges, dams, electricity poles, and irrigation systems. In light of this tragedy, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed condolences to the bereaved families, as stated by Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe.

Minister Garwe has urged artisanal miners to temporarily halt operations until conditions improve and advised citizens to steer clear of open areas during storms. He also cautioned against crossing flooded rivers and emphasized the importance of staying informed through trusted weather updates.

To address the ongoing crisis, the DCP, along with the police and the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, is conducting active search and rescue operations. At the same time, the government is mobilizing resources for recovery efforts to assist those affected by these disastrous weather conditions.
