Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has inaugurated a 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid project aimed at enhancing electricity access for Band D and E residents in the Lambata Community of Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State. This initiative is poised to benefit around 3,500 households, including local small-scale industries, by providing a dependable energy supply.
At the commissioning event, Abba Aliyu, the CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), commended the Minister’s commitment to boosting electricity generation across various bands, specifically targeting the lower bands D and E for reliable power. He remarked on the project’s alignment with the Minister’s strategy to improve electricity reliability.
Furthermore, Aliyu elaborated that this project is part of a broader strategy to establish 40 interconnected mini-grids through partnerships with seven distribution companies. He also noted that discussions initiated during the Minister’s recent visit to Japan could lead to additional funding of $200 million for the deployment of further mini-grids across Nigeria.
Minister Adelabu emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to ensuring the project’s long-term success and operational sustainability. He reaffirmed the REA’s commitment to developing the necessary capacities for the consistent maintenance of these energy systems.
In summary, the inauguration of the 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid in Niger State represents a significant step towards improving electricity access for underserved communities. The efforts by the Ministry of Power and the REA aim not only to enhance reliability for lower bands but also to expand sustainable energy solutions throughout Nigeria.
