The Kenya Meteorological Department projects that rainfall will begin in the third week of March, lasting until late July. Farmers are encouraged to prepare early for planting, as dry conditions have persisted. Additionally, there will be a warning for extremely hot weather until March 3, with daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C.

In response to the recent extended period of sunny and dry weather in Kenya, experts from the Kenya Meteorological Department have announced that rainfall is anticipated to begin within the next three weeks. A representative from the agency indicated that the expected rains will commence around the third week of March and are likely to last for five months, extending from mid-March through late July of this year.

The meteorologist advised farmers to commence early preparations in anticipation of the upcoming planting season, which includes tilling their land. During a briefing on February 27, it was noted that those who prefer dry planting may proceed during the first two weeks of March, as significant rainfall is expected to begin thereafter. Furthermore, the expert emphasized that rains are projected to activate in mid-March, particularly starting in the third week, continuing through April, and tapering off by July.

Farmers have expressed their concerns regarding the delayed onset of rains this year, as many have considered suspending their farming activities due to unusually dry conditions. According to a statement from a farmer, “Every farmer is now ready for the planting season. However, the weather has been unusually severe for an extended period, and it seems there is a change in the climate this year.” This sentiment highlights the frustration among growers preparing for this season’s planting.

Simultaneously, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding hot and dry conditions expected in the coming week. The advisory, dated February 25 to March 3, alerts the populace to prepare for extremely elevated daytime temperatures, soaring above 30°C in various regions. Specifically, temperatures in Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, and areas around Mount Kilimanjaro could fall below 10°C at night.

Overall, the Kenya Meteorological Department’s forecast indicates that rainfall is expected to return to the region in mid-March, alleviating the ongoing dry conditions. The advisory underscores the necessity for farmers to prepare for the planting season without delay. Concurrently, the warning about extreme heat reinforces the importance of addressing current weather conditions as they impact agricultural practices in Kenya.
