A Class 3 cyclone warning has led to the closure of Mauritius International Airport, affecting holidaymakers traveling from South Africa. Air Mauritius and SAA have canceled flights, leaving many travelers stranded. Reports indicate hotels are supporting affected guests, and travelers are encouraged to check their insurance policies for potential claims.

The Mauritius Meteorological Service has issued a Class 3 cyclone warning, affecting hundreds of holidaymakers traveling between Mauritius and South Africa. In response, Air Mauritius announced the closure of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on Wednesday. This closure follows warnings about several cyclones, including Garance, which is currently 390 kilometers from Mauritius, raising concerns for the surrounding islands of Reunion and Madagascar.

As a result of the airport’s temporary closure, Air Mauritius has canceled all flights until further notice. Airlines such as South African Airways (SAA) have also suspended their operations to and from Mauritius. Flight Centre reported having 249 travelers scheduled for flights between South Africa and Mauritius in the upcoming two weeks, advising customers to contact travel advisers for assistance and to check on rebooking options.

Lynette Machiri from Flight Centre SA indicated that the situation remains dynamic due to ongoing weather changes. Some hotels, like Beachcomber, are extending stay options for stranded tourists, while others are providing support for rebooking accommodations. Travelers are encouraged to verify their travel insurance policies to claim any related expenses due to the disruptions.

Otto de Vries, CEO of the Association of Southern African Travel Agents, expressed disappointment regarding the airport’s closure and its implications for travelers. Nevertheless, Air Mauritius has agreed to allow passengers to change travel dates free of charge for flights scheduled until March 31, and SAA is offering reaccommodation options where feasible, albeit amid potential challenges associated with rebooking procedures.

The Class 3 cyclone warning has resulted in significant travel disruptions for holidaymakers between Mauritius and South Africa, leading to the closure of the international airport and numerous flight cancellations. Travelers are advised to remain informed about the evolving weather situation and to contact their travel agents for assistance with rebooking or accommodation extensions. Both Air Mauritius and SAA have implemented policies to facilitate changes for affected passengers. It is vital for those impacted to utilize their travel insurance to mitigate any additional costs incurred due to the cyclone.
