His counsel has stated that he denies the allegations against him.

Jugnauth’s arrest occurred just 100 days post his significant electoral defeat, with new Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam aiming to combat corruption. However, the Financial Crimes Commission’s (FCC) swift action surprised many Mauritians. While some citizens celebrated his arrest, others showed support outside the court, chanting his name.

His wife, Kobita, who has not been charged, was questioned by authorities but was released afterward. Jugnauth spent a night in detention before being granted bail at around $32,000 (£26,000). In office from 2017 until 2024, Jugnauth is part of a political dynasty that has long influenced Mauritian governance. His party was notably defeated in the last parliamentary elections, securing only two seats compared to forty-two in 2019. Additionally, Jugnauth was involved in negotiations with the UK regarding the future of the Chagos Islands, which his successor has criticized as unfavorable, reopening discussions on the matter.
