Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour expressed the nation’s ambition to be one of the few globally capable of manufacturing electric vehicles from the ground up. This comprehensive effort encompasses mining essential raw materials, such as phosphate and cobalt, creating battery components, and assembling the final vehicles.
Minister Mezzour affirmed that the process is already underway and will progress rapidly, positioning Morocco as the sole nation in the Euro-African region with this level of manufacturing capability. The government anticipates that this initiative will significantly bolster Morocco’s exports, projecting a three-fold increase by 2030.
In addition to electric car production, Morocco is actively investing in enhancing public transport with cleaner options. The government has initiated the procurement of electric buses, aiming to incorporate 7,000 into the national transport system. The first order consists of 1,300 buses, with plans for at least half of the remaining units also to be electric.
Officials are focusing on the local production of high-powered electric buses, which presently cost between $180,000 and $200,000 each.
