A 5.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in Morocco’s Ouezzane province, causing no damage or casualties but inducing panic a year after the deadly 2023 quake. The tremors were felt across several major cities. In response to prior disasters, the Moroccan government has initiated disaster management programs aimed at risk reduction and prevention.
On Monday night, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s Ouezzane province at 11:48 PM, according to the National Institute of Geophysics. The quake, originating at a depth of 20 kilometers, had its epicenter near Ksar el-Kebir, located in the greater Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties, although the tremors were felt 200 kilometers away in major cities such as Rabat, Fez, and Casablanca.
This recent earthquake has elicited panic among the public, especially following the catastrophic 6.8-magnitude earthquake in September 2023, which resulted in approximately 3,000 fatalities and damaged around 60,000 homes. Videos circulated on social media showing residents evacuating their homes in fear during the night.
In reaction to the devastation caused by the 2023 earthquake, Morocco has initiated a series of disaster management strategies. Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit disclosed that 325 projects have been funded under the program “Incentives for the Development of Disaster Risk Reduction and Prevention Activities,” amounting to MAD 4.72 billion (approximately $471 million).
These efforts are complemented by support from the Fund to Combat the Effects of Natural Disasters, which accounts for nearly one-third of the program’s funding, illustrating the government’s commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness.
The recent 5.2-magnitude earthquake in Morocco’s Ouezzane province served as a reminder of the country’s vulnerability to seismic events, especially in light of the catastrophic 2023 earthquake. Although there were no immediate damages or casualties, the tremors prompted anxiety due to recent traumatic experiences. Morocco’s proactive response following the 2023 disaster reflects its commitment to improving disaster management and response mechanisms.
