Comoros Opposition Denounces Legislative Election Results Amid Allegations of Fraud
The opposition in Comoros has rejected the results of legislative elections, citing severe fraud and widespread boycotts. On Monday, opposition leader Daoud Abdallah Mohamed from Comoros publicly dismissed the results of the recent legislative elections, criticizing the process for being plagued by “gross fraud” and characterized by widespread boycotts. The vote, held to select 33 lawmakers, experienced significant participation issues as many opposition groups refrained from participating due to concerns about transparency and credibility.
In their response, the independent electoral commission of Anjouan, the country’s densest and poorest island, announced that 12 candidates from the ruling Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros (CRC) party secured victory. Notably, the commission reported thatCRC candidates received between 60 and 100 percent of the votes, despite a claimed voter turnout of 70 percent.
Witnesses noted that in the Anjouan region, supportive of President Azali Assoumani, an abnormal pattern was observed where voter turnout was low, yet the ballot boxes filled at an unusually rapid rate. The minister overseeing elections, Fakridine Mahamoud, did not address the media’s inquiries regarding the election irregularities.
Out of five constituencies on Moheli Island, four featured only a single candidate from the ruling party, with only one opponent choosing to withdraw from the contest. President Assoumani, who has held his position since 2016, dismissed the allegations of election misconduct, urging the opposition to substantiate their claims.
A subsequent round of voting is scheduled to occur on February 16, with Daoud Abdallah Mohamed asserting that the United Opposition will abstain from participating in that election.
