In a recent address to the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar announced the successful repatriation of 1,664 Indian nationals who had fallen victim to job scams in Cambodia and Myanmar. Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the government’s dedicated efforts to combat these online frauds by canceling the licenses of involved recruiting agencies and recommending severe legal action against perpetrators. He reported that 1,167 individuals were brought back from Cambodia and 497 from Myanmar, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance against such scams.

Dr. Jaishankar elaborated on the challenges faced by Indian workers, particularly in Southeast Asia, where online job advertisements often lure individuals into illegal working conditions. The Indian government is actively engaging with the authorities in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos to address these issues. Additionally, he mentioned the government’s initiative to block websites that promote fraudulent job opportunities. He also pointed out the hardships faced by Indian professionals in West Asia, where issues such as underpayment and maltreatment have been reported. As of December 8, Dr. Jaishankar noted that there were 2,164 registered recruiting agencies on the eMigrate portal, underlining the government’s commitment to controlling this sector.

In recent years, there has been a marked increase in online job scams targeting Indian nationals, particularly in Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia and Myanmar. These scams often involve misleading advertisements that promise lucrative job opportunities, which turn out to be illegal and exploitative in nature. The Indian government has taken a multi-faceted approach to combat these issues, including collaboration with foreign governments, legal actions against unscrupulous agencies, and preventive measures such as blocking fraudulent websites. This increasing trend of job fraud calls for both awareness and regulatory action to protect citizens seeking employment abroad.

Dr. S. Jaishankar’s address highlighted the Indian government’s proactive measures to address the alarming issue of job scams affecting Indian workers abroad. Through repatriation efforts and collaboration with foreign governments, India aims to safeguard its nationals from exploitation. The emphasis on legal repercussions for fraudulent agencies reflects a commitment to regulatory oversight, ensuring the welfare and rights of Indian workers in the global job market.
