Reflections on Election Results: A Personal Perspective on Intersectionality and Advocacy

The author reflects on the emotional turmoil following the recent election results, expressing fears related to race, gender, and identity. The election has sparked concerns about rising racism, threats to reproductive rights, and xenophobic rhetoric towards immigrants. As a Black woman aspiring in politics, the author emphasizes the need for continued advocacy and uncomfortable conversations to ensure rights and recognition for marginalized communities.

Upon awakening on the morning of November 6, I was met with text messages from my parents expressing their condolences, a stark indication of our collective despair following the election results. The overwhelming confusion, fear, and realization that the political landscape has shifted deeply affected me and many others, including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those who prioritize equity. As a Black and Guatemalan woman, I embody two intersecting identities that each carry historical significance. The results have raised concern regarding an increase in overt racism, a fear of losing any semblance of safety as society seems to move backward. The election of a man with a controversial history regarding race has instilled in me a palpable apprehension. This man has exhibited a disregard for the nuances of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI); thus, the stakes for my identity have never felt higher. Regarding women’s rights, the election results have triggered a profound alarm about bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom, both of which have become subjects of heated debate. It is especially alarming for Black women, who disproportionately face maternal mortality. This regression in reproductive rights by electing those who threaten these liberties can have dire implications on women’s health and lives. Furthermore, as the child of an immigrant, I feel the sting of derogatory rhetoric aimed at those who come to America seeking a better life. Such narratives do not reflect the truth of immigrant experiences like those of my family, who embody resilience and hard work. The divisive ‘us versus them’ rhetoric perpetuated by leaders has only served to deepen the stigma around immigrants, threatening the very fabric of our society. As a Black woman aspiring to enter politics and law, the acknowledgment of competence is often elusive. The election of Kamala Harris offered a glimmer of hope that perhaps a history of underrepresentation could fade. However, the pronounced lack of trust in Black women following the election results has intensified the existing doubts regarding my place in this field. Despite the disappointment stemming from the outcome, I find a profound sense of determination rising within me. It is essential that we actively engage in difficult discussions about the implications of this election for marginalized communities and advocate for those whose rights are at risk. The path ahead will require vulnerability, honesty, and action in order to navigate this challenging political landscape. In light of these points, I believe it is vital for each of us to contribute to a dialogue that fosters understanding and empathy. We must come together to voice our discontent regarding the unsettling state of our country and support one another in the face of adversity, as this collective effort will ultimately shape our shared future. Grace Harris is dedicated to social justice and advocacy, encouraging an open dialogue on pertinent issues.

The election results on November 6 brought forth a wave of emotions, especially for individuals belonging to marginalized communities. Those who identify as women, LGBTQIA+, or are immigrants, felt a renewed sense of fear and confusion about their place in society under a leadership that has shown a pattern of racist and xenophobic rhetoric. The author, drawing from personal experiences, illustrates how these intersecting identities are affected by the outcomes of political decisions and the broader implications on rights and safety for all.

The reaction to the election results reveals a deep-seated concern for the well-being and recognition of diverse identities in America. Issues of racial inequality, women’s rights, and immigrant dignity are at the forefront of societal discourse. While disappointment shadows many, the determination to continue the fight for equity and justice must prevail, compelling individuals to engage in meaningful discussions and advocacy efforts in order to forge a more inclusive future.
